Burnley, Lancashire - Originating from Aysgarth, Yorkshire
Census records show that John Staveley was born around 1838 in Horwich, Lancashire and is the son of William Staveley of Aysgarth Yorkshire, and Bridget REGAN. John married Elizabeth SEDDON May 27, 1858 at Eccles, St. Mary's, just prior to the birth of his first daughter Lavinia. In 1861 the family is residing in Salford. By 1871 the family is found residing in Burnley as follows:
1871: 16 ? St., Bromley, Burnley, Lancashire
John STAVELEY | Head | M | Male | 33 | Horwich, Lancashire, England | Bookbinder |
Elizabeth STAVELEY | Wife | M | Female | 31 | Pendlebury, Lancashire, England | |

The census shows there is a significant gap between the birth of Emma and John. A child William Francis Staveley was born in 1862 and died in Salford later that same year. There is also record of an Edward William Staveley born in Burnley in 1869, and this child subsequently died during the September quarter of 1870 in Burnley. In 1877 John Staveley died, at age 39. As the census below suggests, his wife Elizabeth was likely pregnant with young Frederick at the time of her husband's death.

Elizabeth's daughter Emma Jane apparently had a daughter herself, Elizabeth, out of wedlock around 1885. Initially it was not clear who the mother of Elizabeth was, but in 1901 a ship's manifest for Cunard's SS Ivernia showing Emma Jane and her daughter Elizabeth traveling to Boston was uncovered, and this connection finally made clear. Emma Jane states that the destination address for this trip is 17 Jordan St, Adams, Massachusetts, and lists this address as that of her "intended husband" George HUTCHINSON. Emma Jane wasn't the only one found traveling to Boston either. Frances Leah "Fanny" Staveley traveled to Boston, Massachusetts in August of 1908 aboard the SS Republic. She gives her mother's address as "24 Temple St., Burnley" on the manifest, leaving little doubt who she is. She states she is going to visit a friend "Mr. Woolley at 165 David St., New Bedford, Massachusetts, & Sister".
Elizabeth's other daughter Lavinia married William READ at St. Stephen's, Burnley in 1881. The family has not been located in the 1891 census, but appears as follows in 1901.

Frederick and Minnie had three natural born children, Nora, Alfred Edlestone, and Harold Seddon Staveley, and one adopted daughter Prudence. Minnie died in 1924 in Burnley. At this time is appears that her husband Frederick moved to Preston, where he died a mere two years later in 1926 at age 48. Daughter Nora remained in Burnley and married Earnest Beastow in 1933. Son Alfred Edlestone married Doris Park in Preston in 1933, and Alfred died in Preston, in 1949, aged 44. Son Harold Seddon Staveley also remained in Burnley and married Marjorie Hammond in 1935, but Harold died in 1942 in Nelson, aged 33 years.

Another Staveley descendant from the Aysgarth line moved to Burnley in the late 1880's. Alice Staveley was the daughter of Enos Staveley (b. 1825) of Aysgarth and Elizabeth Davenport. She was born in Manchester and raised in Higher Booths, Haslingden. In 1885 Alice married Thomas Longstaff of Newchurch at the Haslingden Register Office.
