Birkenhead - Wirral, Cheshire
Alfred Eldon Staveley II is the son of Alfred Eldon Staveley I and his wife Mary Emily of West Derby, and married Emma GRIFFITHS at St. George's Church, Everton, Liverpool in 1879.
1881: 99 Oliver St., Birkenhead, Cheshire, England
Alfred E. STAVELEY | Head | M | Male | 28 | Liverpool | Rigger (Ship) |
Emma STAVELEY | Wife | M | Female | 25 | Bhead, Cheshire, England
Louisa STAVELEY | Daur | U | Female | 5 m | Bhead, Cheshire, England
Alfred STAVELEY | Son | U | Male | 5 m | Bhead, Cheshire, England |
It appears that Alfred and Emma had a daughter Emma in 1882, and she died the following year, aged 1 year, in Birkenhead. Her sister Louisa, twin to Alfred above, also died in 1883. Her death was registered in Birkenhead during the December Quarter of that year, and her age at death is given as 3 years. There is also an entry of birth and death for a William Griffiths Staveley in 1886. This must be a child of Alfred and Emma (the Griffiths name was Emma's maiden name). Unfortunately the child died shortly after he was born, and his death was registered in the December quarter of 1886. An entry of death for their mother Emma is listed for the March quarter of 1892 in Birkenhead, aged 36. However, one year earlier during the 1891 census, Alfred is found already with his new wife Anne.
1891: 91 Oliver St., Birkenhead, Cheshire, England
Alfred E. STAVELEY | Head | M | Male | 40 | Liverpool, Lancashire | Farrier |

Anne STAVELEY | Daur | U | Female | 4 | Birkenhead, Cheshire, England | Scholar |
William G. STAVELEY | Son | U | Male | 1 | Birkenhead, Cheshire, England |
Alfred aged 10 appears to be the only child of Alfred and Emma's that survived as of 1891. His father Alfred E. gives an occupation of Farrier in 1891, which doesn't really fit with the occupations given in 1881/1901. He also appears to give an age two years in advance of his expected age of 38 in this census, but by 1901 his age, and occupation appear to be corrected.
1901: 4 Warwick St., Birkenhead, Cheshire, England

Alfred Eldon Staveley II's wife Anne died in 1897 aged 44 years. In 1901 Alfred has a housekeeper, Martha J. DOBIE. One might expect the story to end there, however...In December 1901 Harold Staveley is born to Martha Dobie, and no father is listed on the birth certificate. Two years later, Alfred and Martha Jemima DOBIE are married on February 8, 1903. By 1904 they have a daughter Emily. Alfred Eldon Staveley (above) died on November 28, 1920 in The Cheshire Asylum, Upton by Chester aged 68. His death was registered by his daughter Martha BUTTERWORTH. Alfred Eldon Staveley was buried in the Overleigh Cemetery, in a common grave (G2350) on December 1, 1920.
Alfred's son Alfred Eldon Staveley III born in 1880 married Adelaide Doyle March 13, 1901 and is found living with his wife and Sister Martha in 1901:

Alfred and Martha's sister Anne is the only sibling unaccounted for in the 1901 census. She would have been 14 years old.
A second branch of Staveleys, from Sheffield/Chester, appear in the Birkenhead region. George Staveley was residing with his mother Jemima in 1871 (also see Beighton, Derbyshire line):

This family has not been located on either the 1891 nor the 1901 census records, except for George and Ann's son George (b. 1877). George and Mary THORN were married in 1899 (Edward OWENS married Sarah THORN in Birkenhead in 1883, and Mary was Sarah's daughter by her first marriage, hence the surname THORN, not OWENS).
