William married Margaret HIND in 1840, and are believed to have emigrated to the United States around 1841 after the birth of their first son.

William's wife Margaret died on December 1,1858, and is buried in Lyndon, Kansas. The family has not been located in the Federal 1860 US Census. In February 1861 the family moved to Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
