Macclesfield, Cheshire

The exact origins of these Macclesfield Staveleys are presently undetermined.  Staveley and Stayley/Staley are occasionally used interchangeably in the Macclesfield parish records, but it is not clear if the majority of the earlier Stayley families are linked to the latter Staveley entries or not.

Two early entries of baptism for children born to a James Staley appear in the register for St. Michael:

Hellen Stayley b. July 21, 1734 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Thomas Stayley b. May 30, 1736 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

There is a marriage for a James Staley to Mary FARRELL February 3, 1727, in Prestbury, Cheshire, and perhaps these children are from this marriage.

Edward Stayley, perhaps a brother to James above, married Martha JACKSON in Prestbury, Cheshire on August 4, 1734. There are a number of Stavley/Stayley entries in the St. Michael registers around that time, with a father Edward as follows:

Thomas Stayley b. December 4, 1735 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Ellen Stayley b. February 26, 1741 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Martha Stayley b. February 23, 1744 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Elizabeth Stayley b. November 20, 1746 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Edward Stayley b. March 30, 1749 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
James Stayley b. December 22, 1751 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

Daughter Martha appears to have married Thomas PERCIVAL on May 5, 1762 in Prestbury.

Daughter Ellen married a Thomas ALCOCK in Prestbury on October 25, 1770.

Elizabeth married Thomas OLIVER on March 7, 1776.

An Edward Staveley (possibly Edward Stayley above b. 1749) married Mary and had the following children:

Martha Staveley b. August 17, 1774 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
William Staley b. December 14, 1787 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

James Stayley married Elizabeth STATHAM at Prestbury on January 20, 1780, and had the following children:

Elizabeth Staley b. March 11, 1781 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Thomas Staley b. October 13, 1782 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
James Stayley b. February 25, 1785 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Fanney Stayley b. October 2, 1791 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
James Stavley b. August 9, 1807 St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

Fanny Staley is found, a spinster, living in Macclesfield during the 1851 census:

Fanny STALEY  Head  U  Female  59  Macclesfield, Cheshire, England  Formerly Silk Winder

Fanny's will is held at the Chester Archives, and dated 1860.
