Macclesfield, Cheshire
The exact origins of these Macclesfield Staveleys are presently undetermined. Staveley and Stayley/Staley are occasionally used interchangeably in the Macclesfield parish records, but it is not clear if the majority of the earlier Stayley families are linked to the latter Staveley entries or not.
Two early entries of baptism for children born to a James Staley appear in the register for St. Michael:
Hellen Stayley | b. July 21, 1734 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
Thomas Stayley | b. May 30, 1736 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
There is a marriage for a James Staley to Mary FARRELL February 3, 1727, in Prestbury, Cheshire, and perhaps these children are from this marriage.
Edward Stayley, perhaps a brother to James above, married Martha JACKSON in Prestbury, Cheshire on August 4, 1734. There are a number of Stavley/Stayley entries in the St. Michael registers around that time, with a father Edward as follows:
Thomas Stayley | b. December 4, 1735 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
Ellen Stayley | b. February 26, 1741 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |

Elizabeth Stayley | b. November 20, 1746 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
Edward Stayley | b. March 30, 1749 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
James Stayley | b. December 22, 1751 | St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England |
Daughter Martha appears to have married Thomas PERCIVAL on May 5, 1762 in Prestbury.
Daughter Ellen married a Thomas ALCOCK in Prestbury on October 25, 1770.
Elizabeth married Thomas OLIVER on March 7, 1776.
