Picton, New Zealand

Robert Jones Staveley was born in Bristol, England in 1857, the son of Robert Staveley and Catherine Ann Staveley of Cork, Ireland.  In 1881, Robert Jones Staveley, a solicitor, emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand. During the trip he met Helen Schabner HAMMOND from London, and later married her on September 16, 1884 in Picton, NZ.  Robert and Helen had the following children:

Bertram Staveley b. September 25, 1889 New Zealand
Marguerite Staveley b. March 19, 1892 New Zealand
Mollie Staveley b. September 1902 Otaki, New Zealand
Eileen Staveley b. February 7, 1904 Otaki, New Zealand
Phyllis Staveley b. April 9, 1906 Otaki, New Zealand


Robert's eldest son, Robert George, married Nora Elizabeth Revell, and settled in Wellington.  He became a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Entrenching Battalion in April 1917 but was killed a year later, a prisoner of war, in France, on April 23, 1918. He is commemorated on the Messines Ridge Memorial.
