Skirlaugh, Yorkshire

Skirlaugh is situated in the East Riding Yorkshire, approximately 9 miles northeast of Hull, and contained within the parish of Swine. Robert Staveley was born in Rise, Yorkshire in 1764 to parents Christopher Staveley and Mary.

Robert married an Elizabeth, but unfortunately a record of this marriage has not been found.  The closest record located to date is for Robert Staveley and Elizabeth COLKWEL, married August 7, 1786 in Humbleton, approximately 7 miles from South Skirlaugh.  Regardless, Robert Staveley and Elizabeth had the following children in Skirlaugh:

Robert Staveley (Stabler) is listed as the victualer for the Sun Inn in South Skirlaugh in 1823.  There is also a John Staveley (Stabler) listed as the Victualer for the Duke of York, also in South Skirlaugh, presumably Robert's brother John b. 1766 in Rise.

Robert's son William married Rachel BROWN in Swine on February 7, 1830 and had the following children:

Elisha Staveley died in Skirlaugh in 1857.

John Staveley, a blacksmith by trade, and presumably Robert's brother, married Hannah TAYLOR in Skirlaugh, Yorkshire on November 27, 1794.  John and Hannah had the following children in Skirlaugh:

*The original parish register for Skirlaugh lists Susannah SAVLEY as daughter of John SAVLEY.  It is presumed this was a spelling error in the register. Other records (census, marriage records etc.) support the birth of Susannah to John and Hannah at this time.

Hannah's husband John died January 15, 1841 in Skirlaugh.

Son Robert married Charlotte MAIR May 14, 1842 in Swine, Yorkshire, and is living in Aldbrough in 1851.  This is one of a few Staveley lines that ultimately emigrated to America, and settled in Clinton County, Iowa.

John and Nancy's son George married Elizabeth ALLISON September 1, 1856 in Kingston Upon Hull.  In 1861 he is residing in New Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and by 1871 his family has settled in Halifax, Yorkshire.

Joseph died in 1879 at the age of 62 years. 

Joseph's son, John William Staveley, married his wife Betsy in 1877 and is living in Leven, Yorkshire by 1881.
