Coundon, Durham
The Staveleys of Coundon, Durham originate primarily from the family of George Staveley and Mary KNOWLES. George's parents have not yet been confirmed, but he may descend through the Sedbergh/Dent line of Staveleys. George was born about 1808, and resided for a time in Hawes and Askrigg. A number of Staveleys descended from Robert Staveley and Mary LISTER of Ingleton were found residing in Hawes around the that time, but exactly how George may fit in, is unclear.
George Staveley and Mary Knowles were married April 27, 1830 at St. Andrews Church in Aysgarth, North Yorkshire. Prior to moving to Lancashire they raised their sizeable family principally in Askrigg at least until 1841.
In 1851 the family is found residing in Keighley, Yorkshire where their last three daughters were born.
By 1861 George and Mary are found in Coundon, Durham "here on census night only". They are staying with daughter Ann b.1832 and her husband Robert THORNTON:

Jane died in 1894, and her husband Mathias died shortly thereafter in 1900.
Matthias and Jane's son Matthias (Mathew), enlisted with the 19th Durham Light Infantry on March 3, 1915. At the time of his enlistment his home address is given as 16 Wye Terrace, Tottenham, Coundon, Durham. A miner by trade, Matthias was 26 years and 3 months old when he enlisted. His record shows that he married Catherine HUDSPETH at the Auckland register office on January 22, 1910, and they have two children. Son Albert, born May 30, 1910 in Bishop Auckland, and daughter Elizabeth born April 11, 1915 in Bishop Auckland. (The GRO index shows two additional children later born to this marriage, a daughter Lilian in 1920, and a son Richard G. Staveley in 1922).
Matthias served with the Expeditionary Force in France between January 31, 1916 and April 29, 1917. His medical record shows that he sustained an injury on September 13, 1916 in France, stated as follows:
Contusion of Back Injury sustained - 13 Sept 1916 - France Result of service during present war, thrown from horse and dragged. |
Matthias was discharged from active duty on December 13, 1917 as a result of being physically unfit.
There is an entry of marriage for Mathias' son Richard George Staveley to a Lydia (Elizabeth) BANNER in the December quarter of 1885. In 1890 there is an entry for a second marriage for Richard George Staveley to Sarah A. GREEN in Durham. In 1891 we find Richard and Sarah living next door to Matthias and Jane, presumably the children were from Richard's first marriage:
