Golborne, Lancashire

Thomas Staveley (b. 1816) in Aysgarth to George Staveley and Dorothy Wray, chose to make Golborne his new home.  Thomas' brother George lived nearby in Haigh

Thomas' first wife was Ann PENDLEBURY, and they were married in 1844 in Wigan.  In 1851 the family was living in Hindley prior to moving to Golborne.  Hindley is located just a few miles south of Wigan:

Ann is present in the 1861 census, residing with the family in Golborne, but by 1871 Thomas has taken a new wife.  A record of death for Ann has not yet been located.  Thomas married Sarah BATTERSBY in 1870, and Sarah had apparently been married before.  There is evidence of at least 3 Battersby children living in the Staveley household between 1871-1881:

In 1871 Thomas' daughter Ann, listed in the 1851-1861 census, has been committed to the Leigh Union Workhouse, in Wigan, and is listed as an "imbecile from birth".

Thomas died in Golborne in 1882 at the age of 67 years. Sarah has not been located in the either the 1891 or the 1901 census.

Thomas' daughter Dorothy married John JACKSON at Golborne St. Thomas in 1875.  Dorothy and John have not been located on the 1881 census, however it is of interest to note that by 1891 Dorothy's sister Rachel has an "adopted son", aged 14 years, named Thomas Jackson residing in her household.  This is presumably a child of Dorothy Staveley and John Jackson.  Dorothy's sister Rachel had married James DUNN in 1882, and remained in Golborne.

In 1881 Thomas' daughter Ann is still an inmate at the Leigh Union Workhouse, in Wigan.  Ann remained an inmate at the Leigh Union Workhouse for more than 30 years, until her death in 1902 at the age of 54 years.

Thomas and Sarah's youngest daughter, Elizabeth, married James SCHOLES in 1892 at the Leigh Register Office, and is residing in Golborne, with four children, in 1901.
