Hindley, Lancashire
Thomas Staveley (b. 1816) of Aysgarth was the son of George Staveley and Dorothy Wray. We find Thomas living in Hindley in 1851. Thomas married Ann PENDLEBURY in 1844 in Wigan, and the following family by the time of the census:
1851: Three Lane End, Hindley, Lancashire, England
Thomas STAVELY | Head | M | Male | 29 | Aysgarth, Yorkshire, England | Joiner |
Ann STAVELY | Wife | M | Female | 30 | Leigh, Lancashire, England | Housekeeper |
Mary STAVELY | Daur | U | Female | 6 | Hindley, Lancashire, England | Scholar |
Ann STAVELY | Daur | U | Female | 4 | Hindley, Lancashire, England | |
Rachel STAVELY | Daur | U | Female | 1 | Hindley, Lancashire, England | At Home |
Daughter Rachel died in 1854 at the age of 4 years.
By 1861 the family has moved to Golborne.
It is interesting to note that daughter Ann, aged 4 years, has had the word "Scholar" crossed out on the enumerator's transcript. Although Ann initially moves to Golborne with the rest of her family, by 1871 Ann is sent to reside at the Leigh Union Workhouse in Wigan, and is stated to have been an "imbecile from birth". She would spend more than 30 years incarcerated at the Workhouse, and died there in 1902 at the age of 54.
