Lincolnshire

The Lincolnshire Staveleys are without doubt of some considerable size and significance. There are in fact some very early references to Staveleys in Lincolnshire. From the second half of the 13th century, a genealogy of the de Rye family gives Sir Robert de Rye of Ewerby (a few miles east of Sleaford) marrying Johanna, one of three daughters of Alan de Staveley. Of the other two, Maria Staveley married Eustace de Neville and Christina Staveley married Alan de Catherton. Somewhat later, Robert Walpole of Stamford and Pinchbeck married the daughter of a John Staveley of Stickney (just north of Boston Spa and 15 miles east of Ewerby). Robert Walpole died in 1569 and was buried in All Saints church, Stamford. The closeness of Stickney to Ewerby (about 20 mls.) would suggest some long term Staveley presence in this area over some three hundred years though the identity and earlier origins of this Alan de Staveley are unknown.
