North Burton, Yorkshire

The parish of North Burton is also known as Burton Fleming, and is situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire near Bridlington.  Thomas Staveley married Francis MONKMAN December 6, 1801 in Kilnwick, Yorkshire, and had two children, William Monkman Staveley (b. 1802) and Nancy Staveley (b. 1804) in Kilnwick prior to moving to North Burton.  Thomas and Frances had the following children in North Burton:

Thomas and Frances' oldest son, William Monkman Staveley, married Elizabeth GRAY October 25, 1827 in North Burton.  His wife Elizabeth died in 1840 and was buried in North Burton on June 23, 1840.  William Monkman Staveley died the following year on February 16, 1841, and was buried in North Burton on February 21st.

Son James (b. 1807) married Rebecca TODD September 11, 1831 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull and is found residing in Hull in 1861.

Son John Monkman Staveley is living on Charterhouse Lane, Newgate, in London by 1841, and died on March 11, 1841 in Newgate.

Daughter Hester married Henry ROBINSON at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull in 1843.

Thomas and Frances' son Robert married Ann WILSON on June 3, 1844 in Hunmanby, and settled in North Burton.  By 1851 they have the following family:

Son John is a servant in the BOUCH household in North Burton in 1861.  Son Francis is in the COLEMAN household, also a servant.  Son Henry, aged 11 years, is a servant on the TOWNSBRO farm in North Burton in 1861.  Son William has not been found in the 1861 census.

Robert and Ann were soon to suffer the loss of three daughters within the span of two months.  Daughter Betsey Staveley was buried in North Burton on January 21, 1863 at the age of 6 years.  Her sister Frances was buried ten days later, on January 31, 1863 at the age of 11 years.  Within two months Esther Ellen was also buried, on March 24, 1863, aged 3 years.

Robert and Ann's sons John, Henry and Francis are living outside the household in 1861.  Son John is in the employ of Robert's neighbor Jeffrey BOUCH, a local farmer of 254 Acres:

By 1871 all of Robert's sons, except Francis, are residing back in the household:

Mary Ann MOODY visiting the household in 1871 would marry Robert's son John just six days after this census was taken:

Parish Register of North Burton: April 8, 1871 John Staveley, age 26 yrs, bachelor, labourer of North Burton, son of Robert Staveley, labourer and Mary Ann Moody, age 20 yrs, Spinster of North Burton, dau of John Moody, labourer were married in the parish church by me, John Wilkinson. Witnesses: James Moody and Mary Whiting

Presumably the child John S. Moody listed as Robert's "grandson" was John's son, born out of wedlock.

Robert and Ann's daughter Jane married John WATTS:

Parish Register of North Burton: October 4, 1879 John Watts, age 26, bachelor, blacksmith of Burton Fleming, son of Matthew Watts, and Jane Ann Staveley, age 25, spinster of Burton Fleming, dau of Robert Staveley, labourer were married in the parish church by me, John Clarke, Vicar. Witnesses: John Staveley, Sarah Jane Monkman  and Anne Elizabeth Monkman

Robert's son Francis is still residing outside of the family household in 1871, employed by Francis DAGGIT, a farmer of 500 acres in Rudston:

The following year, in 1872, Francis married Jane WILSON:

By 1881 Francis and Jane are found living in Hunmanby.

Robert's son Henry married Mary WHITING in 1871, and by 1881 is residing just two miles east of North Burton in Wold Newton:

Henry and Mary move their family to Beeford by 1891.

Robert's wife Ann died in 1885 at the age of 62 years.

Robert's son Francis married Jane WILSON on December 28, 1872, and they are found residing in Hunmanby in 1881.

John and his wife Mary Ann MOODY continue to reside in North Burton by 1881:

John's wife Mary Ann died in 1888 at the age of 42 years.  By 1891 John is residing with some of his children in Reighton, just southwest of Hunmanby.  There is a mention in the parish register for Mary Ann's burial that she was the mother of William who married Sarah Jane ARTLEY (see 1901 census below).

Robert Staveley died February 12, 1900 in North Burton at the age of 86 years.

Living nearby is Robert's son Francis, who was residing in Hunmanby in 1881, by has returned to North Burton by 1891:

Francis and Jane's son Richard Wilson Staveley married Louie Eliza WARRINER in 1900, and is staying with his wife's Aunt in 1901:

Richard Wilson Staveley and Louie Eliza Warriner had at least seven children together, Robert, Eveline, Ida, Richard Warriner, Winifred R., George Wilson and Enid E. Staveley.

Son  Richard Warriner Staveley served as a Private in the Green Howards, Yorkshire Regiment, during the second World War.  He was killed during Operation Market Garden, in Arnhem, on November 2, 1944 at the age of 31 yers.  Richard is buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery in the Netherlands.

Francis and Jane's son Francis is residing at Maiden's Grave Farm in North Burton in 1901, and employed as a Teamster on Farm by William THOMPSON.

Their son Robert William Staveley is boarding in the WAINES household in 1901 in Burton Agnes, employed as a farm Waggoner.

Francis died on January 3, 1929 and is buried at St. Cuthbert's Church in North Burton.  His wife Jane died a few years later on January 29, 1932.

William Staveley was the son of John Staveley and Mary Ann MOODY.  William married Sarah Jane ARTLEY of Hunmanby:
