James Staveley was the son of John and Hannah Staveley of Skirlaugh, b. December 18, 1817.  James married Martha KELL in 1846 and settled in Crosby, Lincolnshire before arriving in Winterton (see note below regarding the KELL family connection):

Note: In 1871 Frederick and Joseph Kell (and a brother Albert aged 2) appear to be the sons of Sarah Kell, aged 26, unmarried, who was born in Crosby, Lincolnshire.  It was unknown at the time if Sarah may have been a daughter of James and/or Martha.  A marriage for a James Staveley and MARTHA KELL was uncovered in Lincolnshire in 1846.  Sarah would have been born about 1845, which suggested she was a child by a previous marriage.  In 1851 Sarah is in the Staveley household in Crosby.  In 1871 Sarah is a housekeeper in the employ of Edmund CLARK in Winterton, and in the same household during that census, James and Martha's daughter Mary Staveley is employed as a servant, aged 17 years.  By 1881, the picture finally becomes more clear, when Mary Staveley is indeed declared to be Sarah Kell's "half sister", confirming the suspicion that Martha KELL was married prior to her marriage to James Staveley.
