John Mair Staveley was born on December 4, 1887, in New Britain, Connecticut, to parents John Mair Staveley (senior) and Ada Emily Esther TOLKIEN.  In 1900 the family is found residing in Winthrop, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. By 1910, John and his now widowed mother are found living in Boston:

Sometime before June 1917, at the time of the first draft for World War 1, John had married Genevieve T. GARDILLO of Natick, MA. By this time they were living at 106 Westville St., in Boston.  On his draft card, John Mair Staveley claims exemption from the draft on the grounds of "Washington Government Contracts".  At this time he is still employed as a Civil Engineer.  In 1920 we find John and Genevieve in Boston:
