Settle, Yorkshire

Thomas Staveley is the son of William Staveley and Mary BOLLAND of Dent. Thomas married Ellen WOLFENDEN in Clapham, Yorkshire in 1806.  Thomas and Ellen had the following children baptized at Houghton by Settle:

William Staveley b. April 19, 1812 Houghton by Settle
Elizabeth Staveley b. June 11, 1815 Houghton by Settle
James Staveler b. March 21, 1819 Houghton by Settle

In 1841 Thomas's wife Ellen appears to be absent from the household:

1841: Gruskham, Bentham, Yorkshire, England

Thomas STAVELY    60   Yorkshire, England   General Dealer
 Elizabeth STAVELY   25   Yorkshire, England
James STAVELY  20  Yorkshire, England  Farrier
 Crissy STAVELY   9  Yorkshire, England
John ELLERSHAW  30  Yorkshire, England  Shoe M
Richard Hodgson  25  Yorkshire, England  Shoe M

Thomas and Ellen's son William has not been located in any census.

It seems that Ellen is in Slaidburn during the 1841 census:

1841: Slaidburn, Yorkshire, England

Edward TURNER    37  Yorkshire, England   Publican
 Ann TURNER   37   Yorkshire, England
 Thomas TURNER  8  Yorkshire, England
Ellen STAVELEY   60  Not Born in Census County  F.S.

The notation "F.S." as Ellen's occupation implies that she is a female servant working in the Turner household.

By 1851, Thomas's daughter Elizabeth appears to have married John ELLERSHAW who was residing in the household in 1841:

1851: Green Smith, Bentham, Yorkshire, England

John ELLERSHAW    Head   M   Male   40   Bentham, Yorkshire, England   Shoemaker (Master)
Elizabeth ELLERSHAW   Wife   M   Female   35   Bowland*, Yorkshire, England
Robert ELLERSHAW  Nephew  U  Male  8  Windermere, Westmorland, England  Scholar
Ellen STAVLEY   Mother in Law  W   Female  69  Gisburn, Yorkshire, England  Lodger

*Elizabeth's birthplace is more like to be Bolland (Bolton by Bolland), approximately 10 miles from Settle.

Ellen's son James has not been found after the 1841 census.

Ellen Staveley died in 1858 in Settle.
