Coventry, Warwickshire

It is not yet clear exactly where the Staveleys of Coventry, Warwickshire originate from.  The earliest christening entries in Coventry appear to be for children of a Robert Staveley and Elizabeth.  This may be the family of Robert Staveley and Elizabeth BRAY who were married in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire on August 10, 1740:

John Stavely b. October 1746 Saint John, Coventry, Warwickshire
William Stavely b. January 30, 1748 Saint John, Coventry, Warwickshire
Robert Stavely b. January 19, 1750 Saint John, Coventry, Warwickshire
Mary Stavely b. February 14, 1757 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

Robert and Elizabeth's son John Staveley married Mary MARRIOTT on March 29, 1774 at Saint Michael, Coventry and had the following children:

Jonathan Stavely b. October 18, 1774   Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire
Ann Stavely b. April 21, 1778   Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire
Robert Staveley b. August 6, 1787 d. November 28, 1838 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

John was buried on May 4, 1828 at St. Michael, Coventry at the age of 87 years.  His wife Mary was buried two years later on February 7, 1830 at the age of 82 years.

John and Mary's son Jonathan appears to have married an Elizabeth based on the 1841 census records for Coventry:

John and Mary's son Robert Staveley married Sarah PINCHES on August 4, 1807 and had the following children:

Robert's first wife Sarah died and was buried on February 21, 1813 at St. Michael, Coventry.  Robert then married Sarah ARNOLD on September 13, at Saint Mary, Warwick, and they had the following children:

Robert died in 1838 at the age of 52 years and was buried at St. Michaels, Coventry on November 28, 1838.  In 1841 we find Robert's widow Sarah with son Edward living at home:

1841: Smithford Street, St. Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

STAVELEY Sarah F  60 Seamstress Warwickshire
STAVELEY Edward M  17 Printer Ap. Warwickshire
EDWARDS John M  26 Carpenters J. Warwickshire

It is interesting to note that in The History of Warwickshire by William West (pub. 1830) there is the following reference on page 779:

Staveley, Geo. Furniture broker, John St., Coventry

Thus far George has not been identified in any of the Coventry parish registers, and it is unclear if and how he may be related to Robert.

Robert's daughter Emma is visiting the household of John and Bridget CROWTHERS in Broughton, Lancashire in 1861.

Son Edward married Mary Ann PICKARD and is residing in Hulme, Lancashire in 1851.

Robert Staveley predeceased his wife Sarah by a number of years, dying in 1838.  However, his wife Sarah is found in the Hospital on Greyfriars Lane in 1861:

1861: Hospital, Greyfriars Lane, Coventry, Warwickshire, England

Sarah STAVELEY   Inmate  W   Female  74   Coventry, Warwickshire, England   Decayed Weaver

Sarah died in Coventry the following year and was buried on September 25, 1862 at London Road Civic Cemetery.

Robert's and Elizabeth's son Jonathan Staveley b. 1774 and Elizabeth had the following children:

Robert Stavely b. March 20, 1809 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire
Allen Lewis Stavely b. December 26, 1817 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire
Sarah Stavely b. March 19, 1821 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

Jonathan and Elizabeth''s daughter Sarah married Charles WILSON July 22, 1839 at Saint Michael, Coventry.

Son Robert married Maria HICKINGBOTTOM on March 8, 1829 at Saint John, Coventry:

Maria Stavely b. December 14, 1829 d. November 21, 1830 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

Robert died the following year and was buried June 9, 1830 at St. Michaels, at the age of 22 years.

Jonathan's son Allen Lewis Staveley married Harriet GOOCH on February 15, 1841 at Saint Michael, Coventry, and had the following children:

Samuel Stavely b. August 21, 1841 d. October 27, 1841 (aged 3 months) Holy Trinity, Coventry, Warwickshire

Emma Stavely b. June 10, 1844 d. November 17, 1844 (aged 6 months) Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwickshire

Jonathan died in 1850 at the age of 76 years.  Jonathon's son Allen Lewis Staveley died at the age of 32 years and was buried on July 14, 1850 at London Road Civic Cemetery in Coventry.

In 1861 Allen's daughter Maria is visiting the Rathbone household.  Also in the household is Pheobe GOOCH, presumably Maria's maternal grandmother:
